David Kelly, Executive Director, BritChamSG
Since 2019, I have had a number of highlights, having the privilege, pleasure and duty of representing British business in Singapore. Its hard to pick one memory for #MyBritChamStory, and I have a number of people to appreciate who have made the Chamber what it is today, from members, Presidents, Board, the Chamber team, UK and Singapore Government, High Commissioners, Trade Commissioners, Ministers, and the team at the British High Commission. MyBritChamStory is one that people might not necessarily recognise… its all of the work that happens behind the scenes, some of which we can’t share publicly, but one of the most important times during my tenure was the support we provided the British community throughout the COVID pandemic. We set up a COVID response communication and had important meetings with the Singapore and UK Government to support British citizens and businesses. Activity from the executive team of the Chamber quickly moves on, but its something I’m extremely proud of, as the impact was felt not only by members and the business community, but families and the wider community. Here’s a picture from a roundtable with Minister Chan Chun Sing, then Minister for Trade and Industry, as TACs got together in one meeting to support Singapore businesses and our own communities. What’s your BritCham story?
Lucy Haydon, Deputy Executive Director & Head of Marketing, Communications & Partnerships, BritChamSG
After more than 8 years, it’s near impossible for me to pick just one highlight of my time at the British Chamber of Commerce Singapore for #mybritchamstory. So I’m cheating and sharing two! In the first photo, I’m proudly delivering the book we designed and published of members messages for HM The Queen’s Jubilee. We received a letter of personal thanks from Her Majesty later on, which was written shortly before her passing. In the second photo, I’m beaming next to the larger than life Michelle Obama, who I had the pleasure of meeting when we helped The Growth Faculty for their events with the Obamas before the pandemic. She is just as charismatic as she appears onscreen. Pinch-me moments are a perk of working at the Chamber! What’s your BritCham story?

My favourite memory with the Chamber is helping to organise and facilitate the "Celebrating Diversity Photography Competition” held at the beautiful Eden Hall in Jan 2023, kindly hosted by Kara Owen, our former British High Commissioner to Singapore.
It was a beautiful evening celebrating D&I alongside our ACCA Singapore members, partners and BritCham friends.
It was fun to deliberate and choose the winning shoots and congrats to all the prize winners. Special thanks to Y Ventures Group, National Gallery Singapore & Siak Ching Chong for their generous door gifts of the beautiful National Gallery Coffee Table book.
Highlights for me were;
- hosting 40 of our friends and colleagues who have made such a positive impact on us since our relocation to Singapore.
- presenting our ACCA Advocate of the Year Award to Alia Saleh FCCA MBA
- having our partners, Junior Achievement Singapore Chair Dr Patrick & ED Hau Yee Ng, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand Singapore Head Samantha, Stewardship Asia Centre COO Joanna there.
- inspired by the beautiful photographs and the stories behind
- visiting Eden hall again and meeting the energetic Kara Owen again, a D&I advocate in her own right and first female British High Commissioner to Singapore
- meeting Simon Ma, my first ever friend in 1987 (Primary 1), not seeing each other for 25 years and bonding like school kids again!
- my tribe, Carla, Noel, Pui , Huai, YY who turned up and has always been supportive of all we do, thank you!

July 2022 - having recently relocated to Singapore, my first memory and first-ever event was to attend an amazing evening with the football legends Neil Ruddock and David James hosted by the British Chamber of Commerce Singapore. Being my first event I was alone and didn’t know anyone, but as the photo attests, the Chamber welcomes all members with such kindness and just hosts the best events for all their members. I, for one, am very proud to be a member, and also have the honour of serving on the Women in Business Committee. Thank you for this memory and for all the amazing memories to come.

3 years ago, I was honored to be asked to join the British Chamber of Commerce Singapore (BritCham) #BuiltEnvironment committee for CBRE Singapore ...
...3 years later I am still honored to be a member and represent this fantastic initiative.
I have always believed we are 'Stronger Together'. Sharing not just ideas, insights and expertise but #commerce and #business, across borders is hugely beneficial for everyone who embraces this philosophy. The British Chamber of Commerce is a key facilitator of this, enabling opportunities for both the #UK and #Singapore.
For businesses or individuals interested in joining, I can highly recommend doing so. My time in the chamber has been both incredibly useful and enjoyable. Please do reach out to David Kelly or myself for more information.
Finally, a huge thank you to Chamber Executive Director David Kelly , BE committee lead Alisdair Gillies MRICS and fellow members including Andy Marr, Duncan Fletcher Payne, Michelle Mitchell, Ben Moo, Joel Tng and more for always sharing their insights and support.

Over the last 7 months at the Chamber, my favourite moment is still ‘The Future of Trade: Insights from the UK-Southeast Asia Trade Digitalisation Pilots Initiative’ event which we hosted in April this year. The opportunity to be involved in the event planning right from choosing a location and putting together the guestlist, to delivering the event, it was a really valuable learning experience for me. We were grateful to have the attendance of both the previous High Commissioner to Singapore, Kara Owen, and His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for APAC Martin Kent at the event, as well as a film crew on-site throughout to capture interviews with the guests. This meant there were lots of different parts to coordinate, but it was so rewarding to see the event delivered successfully and the video content that was captured. This project has been a big part of my work with Chamber so far and I am really grateful to have had the opportunity to assist in the delivery of some of these key moments.

My favourite moment with the Chamber was when I planted 2 trees on with members on Earth Day this year!
Colleagues, members and friends from the British Chamber of Commerce Singapore (BritCham) came together on Monday to plant 70 trees to celebrate the Chamber's 70th anniversary and Earth Day 2024.
Planting a tree has always been on my bucket list. I spent a lot of time in nature as a Scout in school. Some of the advantages of being a student-led Scout group are loads of jungle bashing, tree climbing, night trekking and camping. That meant my friends and I knew the lay of the land, the environment, trees and plants and thriving in the great outdoors. Come to think of it, it was a huge privilege to spend my childhood exploring more of the wild rather than manicured nature.
I never planted a tree before even though I spent all that time in the woods. It can be difficult to do so in Singapore where our trees are all accounted for and taken care of. Our delicate ecology also means random seed dispersal may impact the environment in undesirable ways for other plants and animals.
I’m thankful to the Chamber and National Parks Board for the opportunity to be part of the wider #OneMillionTree and sustainability movement to regreen Singapore with one million trees in this decade. And what better way to get one off the bucket list, than to plant trees with friends and colleagues, which I’m hopeful will stand in the next 70 years and beyond.
